Phase 2 treatment is where everything comes together to build a radiant smile that lasts a lifetime!

What Is Phase 2 Treatment?

Phase 2 is comprehensive orthodontic treatment (typically braces or clear aligners) that follows Phase 1 interceptive treatment, usually beginning when most or all permanent teeth have erupted (typically ages 11–14+).

While Phase 1 addressed structural or skeletal concerns early by guiding jaw development, creating space for permanent teeth, or correcting harmful bite patterns, Phase 2 focuses on precisely aligning each tooth and correcting the bite relationship to create long-term, stable smile results that last a lifetime!

Phase 1 and Phase 2 are strategic partners working toward the same goal: a healthy, beautiful, and stable smile. Phase 1 focuses on the jaw’s skeletal structure, expanding space, guiding growth, and improving airway function. Phase 2 uses comprehensive braces or clear aligners to perfect the alignment of every tooth. Because Dr. Massey intervened early with Phase 1, the permanent teeth have room to erupt properly and Phase 2 treatment is often simpler and faster, producing healthier bites and more stable results.

Is My Child Ready for Phase 2?

Most patients begin Phase 2 between ages 11 and 14, though timing is highly individual and depends on each child’s unique growth pattern and tooth eruption schedule.

After Phase 1 ends, Dr. Massey monitors growth, jaw development, and tooth eruption during observation appointments to assess your child’s readiness for Phase 2.

What we’re monitoring:

  • Most or all permanent teeth have erupted (or are close to eruption)
  • Jaw growth has progressed sufficiently to accommodate the treatment plan
  • Phase 1 progress has been maintained (no relapse)
  • The patient is ready for the responsibility of wearing braces or using aligners

Phase 2 Treatment Options

Damon Braces System

Damon Braces are self-ligating brackets that use a sliding mechanism to move teeth efficiently. Because Damon braces are bonded to your teeth, there’s nothing to remember to wear or manage on your own. They work well for complex bite issues and produce excellent, stable results.

Best for: Patients with significant crowding or bite problems; active kids and teens who want a straightforward treatment path without the responsibility of managing removable appliances.

Daily care: Avoid hard and sticky foods; brush and floss after meals; wear a mouthguard during sports.

Appointments: Monthly or bi-monthly

Invisalign Clear Aligners

Invisalign clear aligners are custom-made clear trays that gradually shift teeth invisibly. Each tray is worn 1–2 weeks before moving to the next. Because aligners are removable, your child has freedom with eating and can easily maintain their regular oral hygiene routine. Invisalign Teen includes wear indicators so parents can monitor compliance.

Best for: Patients with mild to moderate crowding; mature, responsible teens who want a nearly invisible treatment option; patients that don’t want dietary restrictions during their orthodontics.

Daily care: Wear 20–22 hours per day; remove only for eating and cleaning; clean daily with cool water; store in case when not wearing.

Appointments: Every 8-12 weeks

Phase 2 Frequently Asked Questions

No. Phase 1 was designed to prepare your child’s mouth for Phase 2. The two phases are planned as a unit from the beginning. Needing Phase 2 is completely expected and normal.

Timing is everything. We wait until your child’s permanent teeth have erupted and jaw growth has progressed sufficiently. Starting too early can complicate treatment; starting at the right time ensures the best results and often a shorter Phase 2. 

The Massey team takes updated x-rays and photos, examines eruption progress, checks the bite, and ensures that Phase 1 results are holding strong. We also discuss the Phase 2 timeline and answer any questions you have. These appointments are short but important.

Absolutely. In this case, we don’t call it “Phase 2” but rather “comprehensive orthodontic treatment.” Dr. Massey will conduct a full evaluation, take records, and design a treatment plan tailored to your child’s needs.

Yes. We recommend a mouthguard for contact sports (especially with braces). Instrument playing may require a brief adjustment period. We’re happy to discuss helpful strategies.
